Los Angeles County is adding jobs in digital media and entertainment at a faster rate than New York City or nationally, according to a report released Sept. 17 by Beacon Economics, a Los Angeles research and consulting firm.

The percentage of county jobs in the film and digital media industry jumped 23 percent from 2011 to 2016, from 215,000 to 266,000 jobs, the report found.

That compares to a 12 percent jump in New York, and a 15 percent climb in the U.S. overall.

Beacon Economics research director Adam Fowler characterized the findings as a rebuke to the notion that increases in digital production and remote employment fragmented the entertainment and digital media market, and diminished the influence of the Los Angeles region.

Beacon defined the digital media and entertainment industry as seven different sectors – film, publishers, broadcasters, professional services and business operations, emerging digital media, artists and agents, sound production and recording.

The clusters are defined by the North American industry classification system, also used by the U.S. Census Bureau. The system classifies work into 20 different sectors and 1,057 industries as of 2017.
